Each character is pursuing a flaky and capricious romantic partner that they think they have a one-sided crush on

I am in awe of the writing in this show. It's something I can only hope to aspire to, one day.
-
In general I never watch anime for the writing. Because, like, lol why would you? It's mostly quite bad across all subgenres.
-
You watch anime because you like the characters or the subgenre is your thing or you want to blow off steam or you want wish fulfillment
-
But Yuri!!! On Ice is so well-woven that you could throw literary & film analysis at it for days and days
-
It knows romance so well as a genre and it uses the inherent cheesiness of ice skating to quietly introduce all the tired tropes
-
Sleeping beauties, ice castles, fateful meet-cutes while dancing at a banquet, etc
-
It's all in there if you look for it, but the narrative-as-it-appears is grounded in realism
-
Not a goddamn minute is wasted. Even the skating routines of OTHER SKATERS are about Victor and Yuuri.
-
And the other skaters actually move the plot along too!

@ElizSimins pointed out to me today that the big reveal in the latest episode is a reveal bc PHICHIT WASN'T AT THE BANQUET TO POST ABOUT IT -
also I have never seen a show use Instagram to tell pieces of a story, let alone doing it well and humorously and not clumsily at all
-
Like, duh, this is a story about modern life, including life on social media makes it feel real
-
the moment it all clicks for viktor, which is why he boldly makes the [SPOILERS] announcement a moment laterpic.twitter.com/Dk1IcsZPXK
-
because now he knows Yuuri was being weird and cold to him because HE JUST DIDN'T REMEMBER, not because he doesn't care
