For example: are we going to see some Great Firewall type shit at some point? Is this reasonable to put in your model?

The fuck am I supposed to do with that while threat modeling, you know?
-
Also, what if strong encryption gets outlawed in the next four years? The fuck should I say about that to people who are just learning?
-
And should I tell people to have a Handmaids Tale kit or something just in case they wake up and the patriarchy has their bank account?
-
I don't know whether to laugh or cry about that because... well... good god
-
I take our man here at face value, it's just hard to model security based on how vague he is. Also he clearly has never touched a computer
-
also, like, yeah, I'm writing something up that's a lot more helpful than just me screamingly despairingly into the void about computers
-
so if you think this incredibly unhelpful rant is "helpful" or "worth reading" you should consider reading the thing i'm actually writing

We could just listen to what they've explicitly said. What they've already done. See

I'm modeling for worst case, but prioritizing the things that are low-cost for gov, like asking app stores to drop e2e apps.
-
*strangled screaming noise*
-
also, non-gov affiliated hacking still forms a big part of any threat model. gotta learn anti-phishing before anything else.

Sarah, he wants Bill Gates to restrict the Internet
-
as it happens this was MSFT’s original plan, only with a valid ID you’d be able to “log on”
-
That's still being shopped around in DC. Cryptographically authenticated packets tied to your real ID.

great question. agree with
@aexm, threat modeling should make worst-case assumptions about adversaries/threats/environment -
Also consider breaking it into shorter-term model until these things start happening and a longer-term one once they do.

Assume the absolute worst imaginable including effect of external events (eg an attack where populism demands military response)
