i have a question that is going to reveal some embarrassing truths about my basic adult competency
-

ideally you would drill into a stud. Also wood screws are pointy at the ends
-
it's the bottom of the cabinet so i don't think it'll be a huge issue
-
if it's really dense it most likely MDF

I had a lot of these same questions and bought the old time life home repair and improvement books on eBay and it was *super*
-
I have one of those books and it is also super. And I rarely read it cuz I am scared

it may or may not answer this particular question but those 70s editors hit the basics in a major way

or mdf, but just make the starter hole small, and use a hand screw...powerdriven screw easily overtightened & break pb/mdf

if you don't have a set of drill bits, might be a good. Hole needs to be small enough to let threads have purchase into board

I believe the suggestion is to drill holes slightly smaller than the screw's diameter, and *then* screw the frame to the board

Employees at the store are also knowledgeable enough, and in my experience, enthusiastic to help.

https://www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/Wood-Screws/Wood-Screw-Pilot-Hole-Size.aspx … You're drilling into the equivalent of soft wood, with a straight drill bit. Screws in "hardware" aisle.

Ask for screws to put into melamine covered particle board. Pilot hole is a hole slightly smaller than the screw you drill first

You'll want a drill bit slightly smaller than the shaft of the screw minus the ... um ... sticky-outy bits.
-
Additional tip: Scrape the screw over a bar of soap to make it screw in more easily.
-
Source for the above: I lived on a wooden boat for 11 years.
-
THREADS! That's what the sticky-outy bits are called.

A pilot hole is a pre-drilled small hole that acts as a guide to where to place screws. You might want to select a thin bit.
-
Make starter pilot holes so your screw can gain entry. Screws of themselves no matter how good a power screwdriver can't go in.
-
If you go to Home Depot or Lowe's they can help you find wood screws--they have a pronounced groove and flat head.
