i have a question that is going to reveal some embarrassing truths about my basic adult competency
-
-
i do not know what the material i am drilling into is but i suspect it is melamine covered particle board
-
ideally you would drill into a stud. Also wood screws are pointy at the ends
-
it's the bottom of the cabinet so i don't think it'll be a huge issue
-
if it's really dense it most likely MDF

Is this some weird mansplain bait, because if so, it's a little obvious
-
i was going to make a joke about lifting the embargo on explaining things to me because yes i don't know any of this
-
and because google wasn't being helpful i figured it was a basic competency issue

it's just a hole you make before you attempt to drill the screw in
-
first you drill a hole in that has a slightly smaller diameter than the screw you are going to use. Then drill the screw in.

the latter: bring a screw to the hardware store and ask someone to help you find a wood screw of the same diameter and length
-
the former: a pilot hole is a hole in a material for the body of the screw to work its way into the hole and grip the sides
-
so it needs to be smaller than the screw (or else the screw will slip out) but big enough for the threads to get in there
