For its 20th anniversary, I wrote up the online activism in the CDA fight @sarahjeong describes in that piecehttps://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/02/webs-first-blackout-protest-cda-20-years-later …
1999 I was an Internet backbone engineer. We specifically monitored porn sites to check the health of the Internet.
what sort of metrics did you use for the health of the Internet?
Some dude named Art would say "hey, things are slow!" Art was also in charge of every modem used by AOL, Earthlink, MSN, etc.
There was an elaborate HP OpenView system to monitor things at the line level, but at IP level where I worked we had Art & porn.
Re: the modems. Those ISPs all leased from us (Worldcom/UUNET) & claimed the least busies, etc, but we had no service pools.
They were all literally the same modems in the same POPs connected to the same Internet connection.
WOW, that final sentence is awesome, Sarah! Love it.
interesting, didn't even remember the term "cyberporn" anymore, it was all on the "information superhighway"
Great read. I'm curious about how you saw gay nudity as treated differently?
"sued into nonexistence if an individual user sent a single defamatory tweet." …*if*?
"Now, he said, people were going to start posting pictures of naked women." But the cats man, the cats!
