aside from being patently obvious to insiders, is there a simple test end users can use to verify that 2FA is 2FA?

Factors are generally "Something you know (password), "Something you own (device)", "Something you are (bio id)", etc.

So if two things match the same factor, it's still just one factor - just more complex.
