Wow this election sure needed a terrorist attack to make everyone feel great about the political future

-
Terror of course stopped being defined by attacks planned and orchestrated by organized groups abroad a while ago
-
And eventually came to mean any attempted act of mass killing perpetrated by at least one Muslim.
-
So the liberal response was to push domestic terror under the same label, and weirdly, to demand the same abrogations of civil liberties???
-
Now there's a weird thing going on where terrorist attacks look like domestic terror with extremely tenuous connections to ISIS
-
Namely, the perpetrators claim a connection and ISIS claims credit, but there isn't the same kind of orchestration seen in 9/11
-
In fact the affiliation seems slapped on, if anything.
-
And there's no easy linguistic way to to distinguish these acts from 9/11 because of the eliding of all categories of terror
-
American discourse since 2001 has used "terror" in a particular way. That can't be ignored.https://twitter.com/rev_chas/status/742512846559318016 …
-
Was it wrongheaded and racialized and Islamophobic? Yes. But it happened.
-
And the idea that terror came from abroad was used to start wars. Hard to ignore that the same logic could happen all over again.

I hope to never see the words "FBI watch list" again.
