currently sitting in my bank branch office with nothing to do but tweet and watch my phone battery slowly drain
you guys this is unreal, the banker I'm talking to right now has to call the bank of America phone tree to handle the new fraud
the irl banker. she's on the phone right now navigating the automated responses
@sarahjeong do they have to listen to that hideous Muzak hold music too?
@kennwhite YES it's incredible
@sarahjeong you poor soul. Sending good vibes.
@kennwhite @sarahjeong Get BofA to license EFF's hold music. Album by a former staffer, very nice.
So I have this problem where I put off cashing checks and submitting invoices because it gives me anxiety.
Today I opened my new checking account with a check I neglected to cash for a few months.
This is not helping with all the bad habits.
@sarahjeong @film_girl ACH is just a horrible system of crap. There's little-to-no security (as you discovered) and fraud protection is slim
@sarahjeong @film_girl If I read this correctly, it sounds like your identity was stolen? If so, credit freeze? https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0497-credit-freeze-faqs …
@rosyna @film_girl yeah, I got that done yesterday at least.
An account cleaned out with just account/routing numbers—printed on every check.

Banks encourage giving out account/routing numbers by printing them on slips of paper meant for strangers: "checks."https://twitter.com/goldberglawdc/status/727962599141351424 …
@sarahjeong None of this is surprising. Every bit of it is completely infuriating. Banks need to adopt basic asymmetric crypto YESTERDAY.
@sarahjeong 99% of fraud like this would be trivially preventable if your ATM card had a $5 RSA smartcard in it.
@sarahjeong Nothing can save you from having your credit wrecked, or your identity stolen, but you can separate privileges a *little*…
@sarahjeong The trick is to have one account for payments, that you keep a very low balance in, and give out the routing numbers to.
@sarahjeong Then, regularly transfer to a second account, which you use to pay bills, and nothing else. Nobody needs that routing number.
@sarahjeong to be clear: in no way am I saying is was your responsibility to have done this. It's a TRAVESTY tricks like this exist.
@glyph @sarahjeong it's a sad solution, it basically says that if you can't afford to have multiple accounts, you don't deserve security.
@kirimoth @sarahjeong this particular rabbit hole goes really deep; generally, limited access to banking perpetuates poverty
