One of the things I said to @nkulw today on Code Forward was that none of these problems are new, we've just hit a tipping point—
Services are being pushed to expand their userbase, and that means tapping into demographics they weren't built for.
Suddenly there's a realization that some services & platforms are deeply unattractive to marginalized groups.
Reddit is an interesting example to me because its problems are so rooted in infrastructure / business model.
@sarahjeong I saw data a while ago showing it was majority Latino. Surprised me.
@CathyReisenwitz Looking at the Pew study right now, it's the other way around—Hispanic most likely to be Reddit users
@CathyReisenwitz But not Reddit users = most likely to be Hispanic
@sarahjeong Pew included race/ethnicity in its 2013 report. http://www.pewinternet.org/2013/07/03/6-of-online-adults-are-reddit-users/ … The site had greatest market share among hispanics
@natematias thanks for this link!
@sarahjeong you're welcome! Note that Reddit's userbase has grown since then, and that Pew's survey only describes its U.S. users
@natematias Yes! 2013 is a long time ago in Internet-years.
