Better tools *do* make a big difference, and are certainly an important step. But new tools won't fix Reddit's awful norms.

It may be a mistake to focus on subreddits about white supremacy or raping women. Awful behavior is rampant in the main subreddits.
-
There is a general assumption across the main subs that certain kinds of speech, certain jokes, certain assertions will go unchallenged.
-
That's where the garbageness of Reddit starts, and that's why it skews overwhelmingly male (and I'm sure, if there was reliable data, white)
-
One of the things I said to
@nkulw today on Code Forward was that none of these problems are new, we've just hit a tipping point— -
Services are being pushed to expand their userbase, and that means tapping into demographics they weren't built for.
-
Suddenly there's a realization that some services & platforms are deeply unattractive to marginalized groups.
-
Reddit is an interesting example to me because its problems are so rooted in infrastructure / business model.

@sarahjeong I thought it was more white...but, it is 74% male; 64% under 35: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/07/11/reddit-is-not-the-front-page-of-the-internet.html?via=desktop&source=twitter … -
@dearsarah Is that based on the Pew data? I think it might be 2 years old? -
@sarahjeong Yup; can't remember where I saw the race data...will look thru my browser history & see if I can find. -
@sarahjeong I found 70% white cited a few days back when I wrote this; looking for link...https://twitter.com/dearsarah/status/620078315949330433 … -
@sarahjeong For the other#s, yes-but I think I had to dig around elsewhere for race? think I found on Reddit? Looking thru browser history -
@dearsarah@sarahjeong it is in a few places, but I've never found the original source, and can't tell if that is %age of readers or writers -
@tieguy@sarahjeong Excellent point & agreed. - 2 réponses de plus

@sarahjeong I think that framing is unfair. Mods seem to have different motivations and don't seem to feel inherently exploited. -
@adebigare "free labor" cuts both ways. Mods are doing Reddit a favor, and are not beholden to Reddit. Reddit has to give them leeway. -
@sarahjeong Most definitely! I think the modtools are the leeway they're looking for though?
