I think the cloud is a great and wonderful innovation, even though I have deep reservations about how it interacts with 4th Am, ©, etc.
But I worry about how hard services work to elide the boundary between local and cloud. How iCloud works is opaque to ordinary users;

Dropbox's icon is a *folder icon,* like a normal folder on your drive.

But local/cloud are different: their differences have serious technical implications & serious legal implications.

@sarahjeong I think cloud backups are great, but I've been rethinking the premise that the cloud service must hold decryption keys -
@sarahjeong Maybe just as a pro thing, but there can be other alternatives to what happens when user loses password/key -
@sarahjeong for example, you could have backup passwords stored with friends, that only work when you cancel the main password. -
@sarahjeong this makes things *more* complicated of course but might be good for some set of people
