I don't think it's the idea of backups that people hate, it's the idea of backups they can't control or don't know about or don't understand
I think the cloud is a great and wonderful innovation, even though I have deep reservations about how it interacts with 4th Am, ©, etc.

But I worry about how hard services work to elide the boundary between local and cloud. How iCloud works is opaque to ordinary users;

Dropbox's icon is a *folder icon,* like a normal folder on your drive.

But local/cloud are different: their differences have serious technical implications & serious legal implications.
