I think ello does something too retro and familiar to be the Next Thing. But I was so dang wrong about Twitter so what do I know
-
-
Say LJ is about carving out identity through personal narratives. MySpace is a transition from that to FB, which is about identity thru +
-
much smaller chunks of information such as updates & interests (early on, filling out forms / later, liking pages) + media like photographs.
-
Twitter is more of a supplementary form, like the channelless IRC that constantly repeats itself.
-
Tumblr is longer form, but same mechanisms of tagging and rebroadcasting. Less like a chatroom, but similar mode.
-
So what the fuck does Ello do?
-
Status updates. With little interactivity. Whoop-de-doo.
-
And like I hinted yesterday, it's Friends/Noise thing is still not as good as LJ's lists & filters. Nothing used regularly today is.
-
I mean, GIFs are good? So is Ello like Tumblr but for white media people?
-
I mean, whatever, I enjoy messing around with new things. Still gonna play with it for a while yet.
-
But the "minimalism" of Ello isn't elegance, it's dysfunctionality. Crapping in a hole in the woods is not elegance.

@sarahjeong i like the design fine, but i don;t like "beauty" treated as a political stance -
@nathanjurgenson that is definitely weird but I also associate my bad political feelings about FB around the time it got ugly. -
@sarahjeong and bought "beautiful" instagram? -
@nathanjurgenson time to navel-gaze about "beauty," design, and user exploitation
