“ZOMG VIOLENCE” pulls eyeballs, pageviews, ratings. A certain slice of the protesters objects, feels disheartened, drops out.

Media shows up again for the next action, looking for another “ZOMG VIOLENCE” story. Either rinse & repeat — or, and here’s the shitty part,

the people who showed up actively engage in violence in order to maintain media attention.

Eventually numbers dwindle and the media stops showing up entirely. There’s nothing left of the momentum.

Maybe this time will be different? What I’m seeing in Ferguson really moves me. I can only hope.
