I’m putting pieces of the picture together in my head and I’m just increasingly horrified by HandUp

well, sold you a sandwich
-
okay, they made you a smartphone app in order to connect you with other users looking to get rid of their excess sandwiches
-
@sarahjeong i agree with most of this. i think handup itself is nobly intended, but its existence highlights a shameful effect of the tech -
@sarahjeong so handup can both be a thing that's not inherently bad but an indicator of a larger & much awfuller context in which it thrives -
@crulge agree, that’s what really repulses me -
@sarahjeong i am left concluding what you did: everything is terrible -
@sarahjeong but absent a fix for the moral crevasse into which handup operates, is it socially deleterious for it to prosper? -
@crulge I think things can come out ahead on net social utility and still be objectionable on other grounds

@sarahjeong Ah yes, I remember the good old days before the web, when there were no homeless at all. 1989 was the fucking age of Aquarius. -
.
@nycplayer no space for nonprofits Mid-Market because of Twitter tax-break. Hence HandUp is useful. Right in here: http://www.salon.com/2013/11/22/homeless_in_the_tech_economy/ … -
@sarahjeong How effective were those non-profits in the decades before Twitter moved in? Bad enough that SF had to bribe startups 2 move in?
