I’m putting pieces of the picture together in my head and I’m just increasingly horrified by HandUp
-
-
but it’s a bit like the tech industry sawed off your foot, and then turned around and made you a sandwich
-
well, sold you a sandwich
-
okay, they made you a smartphone app in order to connect you with other users looking to get rid of their excess sandwiches
-
@sarahjeong i agree with most of this. i think handup itself is nobly intended, but its existence highlights a shameful effect of the tech -
@sarahjeong so handup can both be a thing that's not inherently bad but an indicator of a larger & much awfuller context in which it thrives -
@crulge agree, that’s what really repulses me -
@sarahjeong i am left concluding what you did: everything is terrible -
@sarahjeong but absent a fix for the moral crevasse into which handup operates, is it socially deleterious for it to prosper? - 1 réponse de plus

@sarahjeong Not seeing the problem with HandUp's structure yet, but understand the anger about the atmosphere that necessitated it. -
@sarahjeong But in terms of the for-profitness & gatekeeping...in the "charity" world, this is COMPLETELY normal. Totally ordinary. -
@sarahjeong Many won't donate to proven but small non-profits without big agency in-between & employees of that agency make WAY more $$. -
@sarahjeong You're highly restricted on spending. You're buying homeless dude's food & he--horror!--buys a bit extra for a pal? Not allowed! -
@sarahjeong Completely get crazy living costs, lack of gov help, lack of empathy. But HandUp's model doesn't seem predatory or unusual.
