Just read a “well you see opposing gay marriage is not like being a racist” piece. Deep breath. Deep. Breath.
“commonly rooted in the much-less-problematic belief that marriage is a procreative institution”
-
-
Do. you. not. see. what that means for women? Hmmmmmmm?
-
the conception of marriage as a procreative institution is directly connected to the oppression of women. that’s a thing.
-
it’s not a simple conceptual disagreement about the definition of marriage. the disagreement runs deeper than that.
-
it’s a not just a disagreement about what human relationships are about, it’s a disagreement about what women are for.
-
the focus on marriage & respectability is seen as problematic by some in the queer community… understandable.
-
but as a straight woman, I have benefited enormously from the marriage equality movement: marriage is being wrested away from patriarchy.

@sarahjeong ...has even one person who has ever said that ever objected to infertile straight people marrying? -
@puellavulnerata and do these people advocate divorcing an infertile spouse to go have babies with someone else? gah -
@sarahjeong AFAICT the idea of marriage-for-reproduction got made up once open bigotry starting being a losing move. -
@puellavulnerata it’s been around before, still around in other cultures. it’s medieval. smh that it gets made as an excuse now.
