Reminded of this story from the founder of the first LGBTQ org (80s) at Harvard Law. Used the word “gay” in org name, omitted “lesbian.”

It was well-intentioned—he thought “gay” encompassed all. Others disagreed. It got heated. He listened, learned, acquiesced, got over it.

History of LGBTQ / women’s rights at Harvard Law would be TOTALLY different if he hadn’t listened.

But that’s what you’re supposed to when you’re an ally and a comrade and a friend. You don’t co-opt and erase and crazify your friends.
