"We just lost them; they're gone" -- what? RT @TheSwitch: Losing its reputation for secrecy could be good for Bitcoin http://wapo.st/170bxiO
@vogon the way it's phrased it seems like the bitcoin are simply gone, since they also mention the BTC the government themselves used

@vogon it just seems like a weird way to say "The government has our bitcoin." Which I think is the only possibility! -
@sarahjeong well, the owner can destroy the private keys forever, in which case nobody'll ever be able to spend them again

@sarahjeong they're gone from accounts the DCA controls, and depending on how Silk Road's holdings, maybe impossible to get back -
@vogon Any innocuous reason to have a special Silk Road account? -
@sarahjeong yeah, you could theoretically buy stuff that wasn't illegal on SR (but why would you ever want to go to the trouble) -
@vogon So... why did DCA have accounts, and why is the DCA guy identifying himself by his real name? -
@sarahjeong they say they were just innocuously buying legal things to look into the market, and *shrug* stranger things have happened -
@vogon DCA get yourself some lawyers jesus -
@sarahjeong there was a CS paper this year (http://cseweb.ucsd.edu/~smeiklejohn/files/imc13.pdf …) where the authors bought legal stuff from SR to deanonymize SR's account -
@vogon God my Bitcoin dropbox folder has been greatly neglected.
