@binarybits@mollyknefel It's not just the preferences of affected community. It's also people who think critically about it ("experts"). -

@sarahjeong@mollyknefel So as a descriptivist I'm hesitant to declare "wrong" the way 90+% of the population uses a word. -
@binarybits@mollyknefel I don't think it's limited to the college educated and I don't think it's a minority of college students. -
@binarybits@mollyknefel And HUGE swathes of the population misspell words the same way. Is it arrogant to say there is a correct spelling? -
@sarahjeong@mollyknefel If 90 percent of people "misspell" a word in a particular way, that's strong evidence it's not actually incorrect.
