There was even a story going around (not sure how many degrees of separation by time it got to me) of a lawyer who got sent out of the courtroom until she came back in a skirt Me: But that can’t be legal Older woman lawyer: *shrugs* What are you going to do, piss off a judge?

Probably the story that bothered me the most was from a black woman defender who said that she didn’t know if she could both wear her hair naturally and be as effective of an advocate. Impossible decisions.

Anyways when I first got into reporting I dyed my hair bright pink and wore moto jackets in the courtroom. “What are you gonna do, piss off a judge?” lol yea why not

Note: This is why I carry two forms of ID when going to court. It’s actually come in handy when I was getting hassled before

in 2018 i was told to wear a suit and tie to conservat--- wait, to court in every jurisdiction. because, you know, basic social conventions of formality
-
I heard the wear a SUIT to court line in 1999. The only thing odd about it to me was that it had to be said at all! Many of our lady lawyers wore pantsuits simply because they hauled files with them.
I think this is a rebel-looking-for-a-cause kind of thing.

When I was sworn into the DC bar, the judge (a woman) spent half her speech reminding the female attorneys to wear pantyhose. Because apparently Lady Justice is offended by bare legs. No similar dress code discussions for the male attorneys.
