the first straight person I ever heard use the word "partner" to describe a S.O. was one of my philosophy professors — radical, feminist, and very french — and it made me do a double-take on the othering of same-sex relationships
-
-
i knew a guy once who made up his own noun for his girlfriend: "co-vivant"
-
i hate it
-
it was clear he was doing everything he could to not get married
-
my favorite* thing during time between prop 8 passing and prop 8 getting overturned was straight men vowing not to get married until prop 8 got overturned *it was the worst

Know what’s ‘the worst,’ Sarah? Your RACISM:pic.twitter.com/agqmT7eKLa
-
fact check: whiteness is racist; this is anti-racism
-
Let me see if I understand this... So if you're born (Something you have no control over) white then you're a racist?

All politically correct language "sound[s] strange, awkward, even a little forced — a purposeful and political act". It's designed that way, a whole range of words whose meanings are diluted, jumbled, stripped. The point is to limit our vocabularies thus control our thoughts.
-
A whole range of words... you mean new words, w/o systematically destroying the old? That's called vocabulary EXPANSION, dingus. As humans learn more & recognize ever more nuance in discussions, we need new words for those concepts. That's part of how language evolves.
-
It's pretty clear you're trying to reference 1984 Newspeak, but you're doing it really badly. "We're destroying words - scores of them, hundreds of them, every day. We're cutting the language down to the bone."
-
"In the end the whole notion of goodness & badness will be covered by only six words - in reality only one word." "Do you know that Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year?"
-
"Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it."
-
"Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined & all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out & forgotten." All opposite what you're suggesting, yes? More words that acknowledge shades of gray allow discussion of nuance.
-
It is impossible to limit thought by expanding vocabulary. The very idea is nonsensical & contrary to how language & thought work.
-
Perverting, corrupting and obfuscating the meaning of words reduces our vocabulary and corrupts our ability to communicate. And that is the point of political correctness, isn't it?

Why not just let people do them and you do you?
-
Oh no! The push is to do you and make everyone else conform. It would be nice otherwise. It's how I lived my life, but it's not the trend.

Why are liberals so judgemental? Just let people call their partner whatever they want? Just like you call white people all sorts of names
