but also this was over a decade ago and in a time before Prop 8 even passed — let alone Windsor, Obergefell, etc

In that context, using "partner" to describe your heterosexual spouse sounded strange, awkward, even a little forced — a purposeful and political act. Times change, I guess, and in this respect, they changed for the better.

I don't know if it's relevant at all, but in Québec (even more than in France as far as I know) most people refer to their spouse as their 'conjoint(e)', which similarly doesn't imply marriage, but isn't always gender neutral.
-
Likewise it's fairly normal in hetero Sydney and Melbourne to call your wife, husband, bf or gf "partner".

Same thing in the Wild West.

The term partner is the common term around the English speaking world for significant other outside of the US and has been for a very long time. You even reposted a report with the term in it. This sort of ignorance makes it hard to defend Americans. Well done!pic.twitter.com/VMfKUbcInW

You need to get out more: I hear this regularly from straight couples in the bay area.

But wait. What about opposite sex relationships where (for whatever reason) the couple were not married? My “common law husband/wife”? My “girl/boy friend” when folks in question are grownups? Little more leeway for words, especially if they are not offensive to anyone.

So, to get the gist of this...it's a forced, political statement when a heterosexual calls their partner, partner? Really?

It'd be nice if there was an additional easy word to use. Partner to me on 1st impression always means 'business' or 'legal' partner.

I had a college counselor who really felt it was important not to use that word. 'Can't you let us have anything?' ... It stuck with me.

Counterpoint from a queer person: we have a lot of things besides one dumb label. Also lots of queer people are in straight/straight-appearing relationships and still feel attached to the label.
