yes, but there are still ways now. It's harder to go A-B-C-D but if you have A and C-D, you can fill in the B by working backwards and still have your chain.
Similar to having DNA that isn't in a DB. You don't know who it is but with details from 3rd source, you can work backwards and have a positive ID.

Bitcoin mining was used to generate funds and bitcoin was then used to pay for hosting etc. Mysterious why they had to mine it - maybe it was a fringe operation that wasn’t well funded? Or perhaps easier to hide the trail if it was mined?
