Like, seriously, I'm bookmarking this one as a case study for a second edition. Jesus Christ.

Once I did a workshop around IoG with some readers and when I talked through a little bit about cultivating community and creating moderation structures to reflect community values, someone mentioned, "Well, sometimes the community values themselves are wrong."

I had a moment! Of course I knew this was true, I covered the Silk Road trial, I've researched groups that are centered around, say, hate or child exploitation. Some communities are objectively bad and no amount of democratization or community engagement makes them "good."

The part that really sticks for me though is — how on earth is anyone supposed to trust that the majority values of any online community, no matter how mainstream or diverse or representative of the population at large, is worth preserving, let alone or empowering?

it's deeply obnoxious how many men are trying to justify this, as if there aren't male developers in this world who made their popularity purely through actively asserting on twitter that they don't have to play customer service to people

A random anon on Reddit represents the face of the whole community? This is literally why gaming journalism is a meme. Cherry picking at its finest. Furthermore, I find it appalling how desperate for clicks all these websites are since they’re trying to spin this into gamergate2

This is a troll. There are lots of bad posts by people who are serious, but this particular post was intended as a parody of how bad the community is, and is not a post by a member of the community. (I'm not sure if anyone else has pointed this out; sorry if I'm repeating things)
