sorry but it's fucking annoying when people (right or left) bring up the fact that obama was shit on immigration as though many of us didn't already oppose it during the obama years. the new enforcement makes a real difference in real people's real lives ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

*galaxy brain* new energy from previously complacent people who want to do something and are looking for someone to tell them what to do is a welcome thing, unless you're an armchair twitter activist who's never organized shit in their life

There's a difference between explaining and scolding and there's a whole lot of unhelpful scolding right now!https://twitter.com/hollingsworthit/status/1009105389781073920 …

In January 2017 a lot of people who had never encountered the brutality of the modern US immigration system got a crash course and I welcome that

there's also this curious underlying assumption that if you aren't an expert on recently-in-the-headlines X bad thing, you must not have been paying attention to anything bad at all in the past 20 yrs. completely inaccurate IME

I think it's still worth examining how we got here. This is obviously a step beyond the pale of humanity, but we were walking toward that line under Obama, not away from it.

The claim is that people who didn't care about immigration policy before Trump are going to stop caring when Trump leaves office.

Indifference in the Obama era is evidence for this claim; so is the complete lack of positive proposals (unlike on health care).

11/9/2016 I remember reading someone here saying something along the lines of "you're worried now, but you weren't when GWB was elected" like learning something over the past 16 years wasn't a possibility.

Agree but the left still did ignore Latin American people on this for years. It's good that people are marching now but it should be a lesson on ignoring the warnings until it's too late.

Trump supporters bringing up Obama like leftists and immigration activists weren't calling him the deporter in chief years before Trump even announced his candidacy. Like the fact that some people weren't paying attention then makes it okay now.

Who’s the bigger blowhard? Oblivious americans thinking they can lecture seasoned advocates on how to solve a problem they ignored for years, or those resentful that a bunch of little eichmanns are trying to make this about their perceived non-complicity?
