I'm super stuck on how much the Zimbardo experiment matters to the cultural consciousness -- I hadn't ever thought about it that way.

I think there's that for sure, which is of course the flip side of believing that sadism is merely a spontaneous product of an environment rather than a choice or directed from above

I think the troubling thing about this piece is the assertion that this big peg backing the idea that people have this "natural" tendency to sadism isn't even real — which then raises the question of why people en masse do behave this way

I think the experiment is unintentionally illuminating in that respect — the guards behaved sadistically because they were told to and thought they were supposed to, the prisoners behaved like "victims" because they were literally not allowed out and weren't actually going crazy

In the end perhaps the moral of the story is that we should stop putting Philip Zimbardos in charge of, like, anything
