I had a high risk pregnancy. It was really difficult and I didn't want to talk about it. I chose not to share the news with some people on my team until about a month before the baby was due. Which I was able to do, as a remote employee.

Thanks for the article! I raised a Series B while pregnant and having the ability to decide when to share was very helpful. I could manage the information in the best way for me, which isn’t normally an option (this was my 6th pregnancy). Thanks for writing.

Many of the women who I talked with felt relieved to not have their pregnant bellies front-and-center. Sometimes for practical reasons (client meetings are more efficient if you don't have to discuss that yes, you’re pregnant; nobody knows if you wear leggings every day).

Not going into a physical office means getting to skip a lot of awkward small talk (“Were you trying?”) and unexpected belly rubs. But also more control over when you share your news and with whom — more like how expectant dads have always been able to handle it.

One reaction people have to reporting about labor in the gig economy is "this isn't driven by technology." No, it's not, but online labor marketplaces / apps do make it possible for trends like outsourcing and contract labor to show up in new places and ways.
