    132 years ago today was the last day of Mary Ann 'Polly' Nichols life. This woman who was loved by family and friends was brutally murdered by Jack the Ripper. Today he is a celebrity. You can even buy beard oil named after him. No one remembers who she was.

    creating work for an editor, a cover designer, a proof reader, a publisher, a bookseller, printers, supply chain, warehouse, marketing, a publicist, librarians, festival workers...the list goes on and on. That's a pretty huge return.

    Some people fundamentally misunderstand the reach of "arts funding". Even apart from the fact that the Arts can generate 4.2 billion GDP, funding the arts *well* just makes great economic sense. For example, if you fund a novelist's work, that assists in (1/2)
