I'm not surprised at all. I've spoken to some PhD students in Ireland who are on criminally low wages with big teaching responsibilities. Departments can't function without PhD students. They should be paid accordingly.

Super graphic and data. I would say that this is probably over estimated as Ireland funds a lot of its PhDs from departmental funds and random grants that are not IRC or ever even advertised. I was paid 700 my first 1.5 years and 1000 for the rest.

It is appalling, but not surprising. The government says they want more PhDs and then treats the students as second class citizens. They want the oranges but will not plant the trees.
