But one thing that strikes me reading Wisconsin Death Trip 1895-1900 newspaper clippings is that child deaths are not evenly distributed

It's not each family losing x% of kids, it's often (some) parents losing ALL their children to disease at once

Not sure if there's research on this unevenness or what search terms to use but it makes "target fertility" seem even sillier
