@s8mb well presumably if firms norms changed they'd be less effective, even if it would be net good for women's choices (+ life happiness)

@s8mb hazing, hard competition (etc) all seem to be effective ways of producing a lot, which is why firms that use them succeed

@s8mb but it's possible that making market labour more pleasant for women would outweigh those output costs in other happiness gains

@bswud Yeah, that's one thing I'm claiming. Similar to my belief that firms that require emails outside of work hours should be shamed, etc.

@s8mb I think it's likely there are *huge* productivity costs to restricting these elements in industries where they prevail

@s8mb more interesting Q for me: why do you think women more likely to be mistakenly insufficiently career-y (rather than excessively)?

@s8mb I'd have thought the opposite: women realise they've ploughed too much time & effort into something giving them little satisfaction

@bswud @s8mb honestly this sounds like the reasoning of the flood of housewives into workforce in the 70s-80s, universal feature of life ;)

@bswud @s8mb this sounds like exactly the sort of thing our mothers said about being housewives when they went back to school/work in 80s

@bswud @s8mb cultural status values & grass being greener maybe more powerful than personal preference
