30% of all 70% conclusive evidence points away from the truth. Plenty of true facts out there that legitimately point to falsehoods.

Ordinarily, it's just a hassle to pile up enough truth-oriented facts to outweigh the lie-oriented ones. But politics makes it poisonous.

If people have political motives to hide the truth, they can seize on facts that happen to point away from it. There will usually be some.

Agreeing with a fact that promotes your opponent's side of the argument is seen to be the same as submitting to him and surrendering.

On the other hand, if you deny your opponent's facts, and he can demonstrate them, you lose a bit of ground. Better than surrender, but...
