Why do judges decide cases as narrowly as possible?

Judges are always throwing out cases on a technicality and saying "phew, we can leave the important legal issues ambiguous a bit longer".

Wouldn't we want a ruling as soon as we notice part of the law is uncertain? Is it just a makework program for lawyers?
