The Book of Abandoned Truths. Every chapter contains the strongest possible argument, perhaps just an extract from a contemporary source if available, for a proposition which was once universally by educated observers, but is now known to be false.

In graduate school I came across this amazing book that was an encyclopedia of rhetorical tropes. Listed in alphabetical order with their Greek names like catachresis and zeugma. Excitedly told friends. They were skeptical. Eventually realized I had dreamed it the night before.
