Holy shit thank you guys for the overwhelming support— I'll definitely be exploring this further in the future! I've got some ideas for more

You couldn't do a tutorial on how you did them could you. I've been working on something similar but your's look wayyy better then what I came up with. I'm trying to do a comet but my smoke simulation has not enough noise in 0G and just kind of plane.
-
Probably not a true tutorial, but I do like to post breakdowns/process stuff usually. I'll try to do something like that on the next one if I can! Something about my workflow in Procreate makes it to eat my timelapse half the time and it definitely got this one lol :(

This is seriously impressive. I'd love to see that live in game. What did you use to record the gif? It's super smooth.
-
It’s actually not realtime yet, but I plan to use a similar technique to build this for real later! This is exported from aftereffects, but I used photoshop to make convert it to a gif (imo for whatever reason I get better gifs out of PS than AE)

Awesome stuff. Was this done in 3DS Max?
-
It's not realtime yet, but glad it looks like it! This is just a concept made in Procreate (ipad) + aftereffects to give it movement

Beautiful work! I'm curious whether you've had a chance to try out (or work together with someone who has) actual propulsion imaging software... which have a lot of leeway to dreaming up different visions.
-
Not familiar with that (or maybe just not with the particular term)! Sounds interesting, do you have a link to something I could check out? Maybe I'm way off, but it made me think of the "deep dream" stuff. Is that the same idea?
-
(After looking it up) Deep Dream looks like a fascinating way of imaging, and I would imagine something like that could come in handy to get a desired image effect.
-
I was thinking of what to base the imaging on - the flow of the rocket plume. The engineers who do that for real use "Computational Fluid Dynamics" (CFD) which puts together all the physics...
-
...and for real rockets the result is maybe a bit boring (unless you are doing a realistic simulation like for a docu-drama). But if you can then play with simulation and visualization to get something more fascinating, outside normal experience.
-
Just doing a quick search I can find lots of technical (and mostly boring) tutorials for the engineers doing their jobs. And the Sci-Fi simulations are probably protected IP. But there are engineers who love to make art with their simulations.
-
Here's one example I found on a YouTube search of someone who took a realistic (albeit unusual) simulation and played with the visualization (and playback speed) for effect:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do5hJuCF3_E …
-
oh, I see what you're talking about! Yeah personally I don't do much simulation work, but check
@the_mantissa if you haven't already. I feel like it's in that vein
