i've said it before and i'll say it again redemption arcs where the character immediately dies after doing exactly one nice thing and avoids doing any actual work to be better aren't satisfying or necessary it's so much more important to show them putting in effort to improve

Endeavour's arc is great specifically because Horikoshi knows he isn't owed forgiveness. The trauma he inflicted on his family is just too bad to say such a thing, but Endeavour tries to be a better person anyway and understands if his family never forgives him. Top tier writing.
