I admire much of Yuval Harari's writing (despite disagreements), but he mangles the meaning of "humanism," and philosopher Andrew Norman urges him to reconsider: The Meaning and Legacy of Humanism: A Sharp Challenge from an Ally -https://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php/articles/9724 …

Often the best of cannot distinguish the two. “Truth and influence don’t always go together. Silly stories may convince billions, while the truth enjoys just a tiny following. But then the question is what you seek in life—power or truth? Yours, Yuval”https://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php/articles/9724 …

It's important "out worldview not be conflated with those of communism, ..." Well, it was the 14th principle laid out in the First Humanist Manifesto. His excuse is, those weren't *real* humanists.

But the term Humanism is unfortunate, as it implies human centrism. And it implies that humans do not have a dark side that we must keep an eye on. Should Harari revise the term or should the Humanist associations revise the term?

Authors in philosophy often use common terms idiosyncratically so I wasn't too surprised that I found Harari's definition of humanism barely recognizable. For 1 thing I don't 'worship' humanity. Human rights are a special case of personhood rights that don't belong to humans ONLY

Not having yet explored the dispute here (I will), I applaud you, Andrew, and Yuval for engaging honestly and respectfully with this issue. It's refreshing to see a dispute that doesn't entail someone spewing falsehoods or bad faith assumptions about the other's ill intentions.

A fascinating debate. It seems to focus on the eternal existential question - in what space do humans exist given we are caught between higher reason and biological determinism? While terminology helps us think through this question, ultimately our choices define the answer.

Yuval flags the shift to human reason AND feeling, but then immediately excludes the former from his definition & keeps the "supreme source of authority" part? [And we (dead) reckon/reason our way with "The Frankenstein Prophecy"—a felt foreshadow—in mind.] #TheNavigationProblempic.twitter.com/oadt9e8uiF

I don't think Norman would agree: "First, I’m compelled to concede that you have grounds for using the term humanism as you do.... and I’ll grant that that is precedent enough to give you the right to use humanism in roughly the way you do."

@harari_yuval He is not challenging the idea of humanism but the historical impact of it. All isms started with idea of helping humanity but ended in destroying it.
