Amidst all the anxiety about AI and predictive algorithms, let's remember why they are being deveoped: "AI can reduce UK cancer deaths by 10%." https://www.ft.com/content/5437ae4e-5c27-11e8-9334-2218e7146b04?utm_campaign=c5e2767733-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_05_22&utm_medium=email&utm_source=The+Apolitical+Platform&utm_term=0_a11f6796a2-c5e2767733-185484429 … via @financialtimes

There are many tortured and probably untrue assumptions that have to be made to get to that figure. AI is good at high signal-low noise problems like image identification and autonomous driving, not low signal/high noise problems like cancer detection.

The potential for AI goes far, far, far beyond just reducing Cancer deaths. It's hard to imagine, because we're simply not that advance, but try to comprehend the discoveries a recursive intelligence could achieve, when it can increase it's own intelligence exponentially daily.

Elimination of disease, is only the tip of the iceberg.

However, the very real risk of an AI growing beyond our ability to control, is absolutely worthy of anxiety, given how connected our world is, and how dependent we are upon software driven environments.

Steven, humanity should invest 10x more in biotech. Both government and private companies. Is this not obvious enough? Could we create a lobby in washington for that? That could cure all diseases and extend human life, freeing up trillions of dollars from healthcare.

Yes, and cancer in humans can be completely eliminated by turning us all into grey goo.

Whatever happened with the treatments @VICE did the documentary on where they were infecting the cancer with viruses that had been altered to only kill the cancer.
