Elon Musk thinks flying cars will chop our heads off. (Ever notice how AI-fear-sowers see catastrophe everywhere? Many belong to "existential threat" projects that think up as many as they can). https://cnet.co/2kdnBOo  via @CNET

He also said recently that he believes Tesla will be ready for full autonomy(!) within the end of 2019. And yet tesla stock fell by a few % after that live interview. His word doesn't seem to carry much weight nowadays..

This gives the impression that Musk is worrying about flying cars decapitating us. That's misleading given the context (he's said this multiple times, e.g. below) in which he's clearly outlining potential problems with flying cars in the hypothetical.https://www.ted.com/talks/elon_musk_the_future_we_re_building_and_boring …

Musk has also speculated that flying cars would be very loud and disruptive, like helicopters. An equally misleading alternative headline could have read, "Elon Musk thinks flying cars will cause hearing loss. Wonderful."

Did you listen to what he actually said in context? This is a great example of a ridiculous clickbait headline. I expect better from you @sapinker

Millions of poorly maintained light aircraft flying over major cities *is* dangerous. And, for the record, so is sufficiently advanced AI. Psychologizing people who disagree with you is a poor substitute for winning arguments.

you're making a fool of yourself if you're ridiculing people that have concerns about AI even the late Stephen Hawking aired his concerns?

Mr Pinker, with all due respect etc, you do not possess the knowledge that Elon Musk has of flying things, or cars, or AI. You caricature the views of those who disagree with you, again.

You are misstating the concerns as quoted in the article. Anything that flies over you can fall on you, or drop things on you. It is why the FAA is careful in allowing things that can fly over you. Those in the aviation industry (myself included) are rightfully concerned.

That's an interesting perspective considering claims that actual deaths in Tesla Autopilot should be viewed statistically whereas potential future negative impact of everything else should be looked at anecdotally (and hypothetically).

Visceral description indeed! Elon’s fear is interesting. It apppears to have literally driven and blasted off in amazingly innovative directions. Maybe it will fly him (and us) in one safely as well.

To clarify, it seems SpaceX and Tesla were largely built in response to the fear of the Earth becoming uninhabitable for humans. Elon seems to get things done when there is a threat. Curious to see where he goes with this one.

AI-fear-sowers ? Is that a thing? You're describing a man who actively invests in open Al as being anti-AI. Was Einstein a Nuclear-fear-sower for penning a warning letter to Roosevelt? #AI

Einstein was anti-nuke, not anti-nuclear. Just as @elonmusk is anti-superintelligentAI but promotes open AI. But point taken, depends what weight you use on the "some value"
