3 reminders from the disbanding of Basque ETA: 1 Despite hysteria about ISIS, "age of terror," etc, terrorism was worse in W Eur in the 70s & 80s than in 21st C. 2 Terrorism doesn't work. Basque country's still Spain. 3. Terrorists groups always die out.https://nyti.ms/2KviKnB

did you just compare ETA to ISIS? not even in the same league. i’m no friend of the left, of violence, or of anarcas, but urrutikoetxea is not the same as al-baghdadi. IS has(d) no allegiance other than to their self-bestowed divine right-based ideology.

You make a good point about looking at the data instead of headlines, but it’s not either/or. You can acknowledge the “evil” of ISIS while realizing that terrorism on the whole may be declining. Concern about ISIS burning people alive or keeping sex slaves is not “hysteria”.

Very true. We shouldn't assume due to media coverage/spin that terrorism is the worst it's ever been, but the suffering these groups like ISIS cause is still a real cause for concern.

Was ETA terrorist or resistance? What about IRA? What about Georges Washington? Absent a rigoureuse définition, the word “terrorist” becomes an instrument in the hands the mainstream elite/establishment to silence any contrarian view of the world

Islamist terrorism coupled with large scale Muslim immigration to a Europe with below replacement fertility represents an existential threat to Europe which dwarfs the previous separatist threats IRA and ETA.Not even close.

By downplaying the danger of radical Islamist terrorist coupled with the demographic assault of massive Muslim immigration Pinker is giving aid and comfort to people who wish to engage in a stealth takeover of Europe. He is an Islamist fellow traveler.

...but would you disagree that the ETA has a hand in bringing down Fascism in Spain, and thus improving Basque rights (this of course makes the last 4 decades of its existence superfluous)?

"the conservative government has rejected international mediation efforts, determined not to allow ETA a brokered deal like the one that ended hostilities in Northern Ireland between the British government and the Irish Republican Army."

Maybe there's a lesson for the UK there in not giving concessions to terrorists over the Northern Ireland problem

Somehow there is not such ISIS hysteria in Spain, although suffering more Islamic terrorist murders than the US since 2001 (209 vs 119)

3? That often depends on a fall in public support. Too many in the Islamic world have partial and hidden sympathy for some of the terrorist goals (implementing sharia, destruction of Israël etc.), so its not going away any time soon.

I’m glad you said that. Having lived through the IRA threats in London in the ‘70s, I’ve thought about that a lot in recent years.
