I started learning English at the age of 27, I passed FCE, CAE (Cambridge Assessment Exams) and now I'm preparing to take C2 Proficicency (CPE). I didn't have the opportunity to study it when I was a child or adolescent, but this didn't prevent me from picking it up late

Any insights into why a toddler can easily pick up two or more languages if immersed early in life and learn them relatively quickly? The time to learn and become fluent later in life becomes longer even though the brain is more developed.

On the contrary, the ability to achieve proficiency in math or logic occurs much later in life.

Having spent 2 days at a Neurolanguage Coaching Conference, I am definitely siding with Neurolange and Neurolinguistics on this subject.

I learned English in my thirties, am continuously improving my grammar [many claim I AM at native level by now] but will never lose my accent. Perhaps the problem is not fading ability to learn but lacking motivation to put in the effort to get from 'good enough' to native-like

My impression is that most people live and die without ever learning proper grammar in their own language.

I taught myself Spanish at 34. In two years of study, I was conversing fluently in Spanish with my neighbors. I went on to become a bilingual teacher, teaching in that capacity for 15 years. I developed a deep love for Spanish literature. Linguistics in college was the key.

Schooling should be reordered. Eg: Age where language ability highest: teach only that and Programming (similar to language). Too much time wasted in valuable grade school years on Thanksgiving and Christmas indoctrination.

i have always wanted to reset neuronal plasticity by resetting epigenetic marks with Azacitidine or an HDAC inhibitor and see if the ability to learn language will re-appear. would be an easy experiment to do using adult cancer patients treated with these agents.

The article seems rather biased in that it reflects a U.S. american point of view. The whole idea of learning a new language when you’re grown up is made up to be a thing close to a miracle…

One thing I've noticed about a lot SLA research is that the researchers don't speak another language...if they did, they'd know there are too many variables to make any claims whatsoever.

Oh, and another thing, this is how you test someone who claims fluency in another language: Person A: I'm fluent in x You: Awesome, I'm x-nationality. Person A: (Of all the gin joints in all the towns...) Well, when I say fluent I mean .....etc.
