Who came up with the absurd notion of “cultural appropriation” and why does anyone give the concept any credibility?

Because modern artists are driven by money and publicists and won't stand up for a practice that has driven their craft for millennia for fear it might cut into profits from tweens that are no longer being educated in anything that matters.
-
I do get it. An East Indian girlfriend of mine explained it this way: white women in the US who wear bindis are seen as quirky and trendy, but when East Indian women wear them here, they are simply seen as "ethnic".
-
She says that white American women have not "earned" the right to wear bindis; Asian women have suffered all the oppression, prejudice, and racism that comes with their cultures and wearing bindis.
-
Yep, life isn't fair, the best you can do is strive for equal opportunity. Also, when you enter a democratic, multi-cultural society with freedom of expression, you accept that there is no such thing as "earning" the right to wear something.
-
Even our most noble professions that require great sacrifice are common Halloween costumes. I also don't see how your friend's view doesn't just marginalize Hindus and Asians further.
-
No. Not everything is equal opportunity. Cultural appropriation is actively taking culture on a macro scale and selling it without regard to its origin, meaning, or people. It's active disrespect for profit. It'd be like selling Purple Hearts at Target as accessories.
-
Are you familiar with the Stolen Valor Act of 2005? It was struck down as unconstitutional. However, there's a difference between being culturally insensitive and CA. "Appropriation" is a word that means something, you don't get to twist the meaning to defend a nonsensical idea.

Identity politics is a tool of Russian Intelligence used to destroy Western democracies. Quite clever, really.

the phenomenon where people mock other cultures is also considered cultural appropriation, and that really is douchey.
-
Also, this is not a pressing problem in America. it's just some silly young people on twitter who can generally be ignored. Most American's have no contact with someone yelling 'cultural appropriation'.

People who make accusations of cultural appropriation are just trying to accrue social power by appointing themselves judges of what constitutes a valid form of self-expression. An ugly trend.

Cultural Appropriation: [race] should not participate in a culture belonging to [~race.] The mindset this principle requires is far from innocuous. Those who are phobic of cultural exchange exhibit pure racial-tribalism.https://medium.com/@brandonbahret/why-we-must-resist-racial-identity-cd762c191c97 …

You can't be for mullticulturalism and then turn around and complain about cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation comes with the territory when people of differing backgrounds interact and share their culture with each other.

A. “Diversity is our greatest strength!” B. “Cultural appropriation is horrible!” These claims, coming often from the same people, are mutually exclusive. It’s A or B, but only an idiot claims both.
