I lose IQ points every time I hear you talk about politics, Pinker.

I think most on left were well aware that social anxiety and racial animus were the main motivating factors for Trump voters. Economic hardship was just an excuse. In other words your characterization of ‘left wing talking points’ is unwarranted.

That's not a popular left-wing talking point. It's a right-wing retort to the left-wing accusation that they're not really concerned about anything and their politics is fueled by resentment.

Left-wing talking point? It's usually mentioned with neo-nazis are marching through a town or shooting up a school. Maybe the Boston Globe could also investigate irony, because that's how "economic anxiety" is generally used.

The real reason Trump was elected is because Hillary Clinton was the worst human being ever inflicted on the American people as a presidential candidate. Do you know how bad you have to be, how corrupt, how despicable, how ... gah, words fail me... to lose to DONALD TRUMP?!?

There is indeed a schism on the left about this. But I tend to find that most ardent leftists see economic distress as a point to run a popular movement on - not what actually motivated the Trump vote. In other words - material factors and self-interest can pull them left.

I don't think that was really a "left-wing" talking point. For some, maybe, but just as often heard in moderate and right-wing circles. Many of us "left-wingers' have been saying its identity (i.e. prejudice) all along.

But *is* that a common left-wing talking point? That seems like a common *pundit* talking point, but one the *left* has been eager to recast as racial resentment (if not outright racism). In that regard, this would seem to give some credibility to the left’s preferred narrative.
-
Aside, independent of whether or not that’s a *correct* narrative, it never struck me as a *productive* one (think: “deplorables”). But being aware of the actual, underlying motives *is* useful for identifying effective rhetoric, instead of spinning wheels on superficial excuses.

"Debunking" to me seems a to strong word for the claims made. One sentence in the article "Never mind that Clinton won overwhelmingly among poor and working voters of color". So maybe she lost white working voters? Voters that a candidate of the left would be expected to win?

I think anyone who is successful is a very bad person. People of color/minorites do better in the United States than any other country taken as a whole. Those trump voters aren't working hard enough keeping them down. I guess white liberals give them all opportunities and money

This was pretty much the left’s theory the day after the election and by golly, now science proves it. How lucky was that?

Good evidence income inequality doesn’t account for it. Poor evidence racism does. Debunking bad theory A) does not endorse bad theory B).

Good article thanks for sharing. Unfortunately the “progressives” seem as hell bent on tribal identity politics as the assholes on the alt right.

"The better strategy is to activate the multi-racial coalition of blacks, Hispanics, white liberals, and suburban women who supported Clinton in 2016 and who have become the engine of the so-called resistance." What terrible advice by the author: a call to more divisiveness.

Any author that starts with racist, misogynistic demagogue when speaking of Trump you know they will look for data to support their beliefs. The swing voters are more motivated by the disbelief in post cold war geopolitical strategy.
-
People that use these words racist, misogynistic demagogue are only trying to morally posture. When most people are guilty of some form of ethnic based fears, people tend to understand their gender better than the other, and people like this author are the ones demonizing groups
