I enjoyed your language stuff back in the day but the latest Panglossian drivel is, well...

Yes, let's revert to eternal fatalism.

A nice romantic coming of age movie.

Re: AI, the most credible existential threat is also an urgent short term one: the development of Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems that take human decision out of the loop and lower the threshold for war and use of force. I'd love for
@sapinker to chime in on this issue. -
think he said that there’s no reason to think that computers would do any worse than we do at war and if they get smart, we’d expect them to be more likely to deescalate war.
-
They would become like nuclear weapons, so devastating as to never warrant their use and deescalating what would be higher levels of conflict.
-
That's one possibility. Still, I'm loath to endorse this mad "If-you-attack-us-we'll-blow-up-everything-including-ourselves-so-you-better-not-do-it" strategy for world peace. Hoping that future generations will evolve wise enough cultures to think of a better path to world peace.

It's just an observation, not an endorsement.

Steven, have you hear
@RFultonBrown's critique of "Enlightenment Now"?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rxbv8Y5LSPQ … -
Actually, I gave this talk the day before “Enlightenment Now” came out. I was responding to “Better Angels.”
-
Hi Rachel! Nice to hear from you. I love your work, and I didn't sign my colleagues' petition to condemn you :)

In case anybody has any questions about why I indicate a connection between Steven Pinker and his fellow "race realists" at alt-right Quillette. https://mcclernan.blogspot.com/2018/04/steven-pinkers-rightwing-alt-right-and.html …

I think that SP's finest hour lies yet ahead. I’m waiting for him to chime in on CRISPR gene editing vis-a-vis race & IQ. (Not just IQ, but other cognitive traits valued by society.) IMO, this is how HBD will catch on in the establishment, consistent with their moral intuitions.

The brutal, ugly irony where Steven Pinker is the face of Counter-Enlightenment Conviction.
-
And how would he be that? Please enlighten us.
-
Denaturing Enlightenment thinkers with a shallow treatment. Promoting a self-assured dogmatism, opposition to which united them.

It's not that surprising really; we haven't been enlightened for very long in the grand scheme of things :P

Intelligence may indeed be goal directed via the human will, but it is not in its nature a function of pragmatism but is the apprehension of the formal orderedness of things towards final causes, ends and purposes. Aristotle's necessary pure act.. the transcendent is intelligible

Rather disappointing in an otherwise interesting argument to see the de jure genuflection to religion as a bad thing. It was the medieval monks who began universities and modern science with Aristotelian metaphysics (still good) and the deepest respect for reason and argument.
