Selfies aren't portraiture, though. They're a form of experience-sharing.

A PSA from those who take pictures as vocation: For a good portrait hire a freakin' professional photographer. *** This message brought to you by starving and marginalized photogs around the globe.

Assuming you think a smaller nose make you look better! A selfied close-up shows the perspective of those who are close to you (physically). The distant portrait maybe be lovely, but also cold and sterile; the intimate close-up may be the real you.

And why is that statement of big nose = ugly face necessarily true?

Intellectualism gone awry. If it uglifies you then why is every wanna be model on Facebook and Instagram using it?
-
They probably have noses that are considered too small by conventional standards

In my case the nose becomes 10 feet long then.

Every time you take a selfie you lose an opportunity to raise yourself out of abject poverty. Also somewhere an angel loses it wings or a hymen is ruptured.

That is the point of selfies. If it weren't then there wouldn't be stupid dog noses, anime eyes, and pixie dust.

yep ... phone cams are typically 28 mm lenses, portrait photogs tend to use lenses closer to 100 mm

also: look at the lens, not the screen. (unless you’re going for the psychotic doesn’t-know-to-look-people-in-the-eyes look.)

Not always true, and I speak as a photographer and DP with over 40 years experience. When the camera is above the eye-line, portraits from a close perspective can be very effective and, luckily, many selfies are shot this way. BTW check the close ups from Amelie.
-
Also, who are all these photographers that ‘ know’ ? What do they know? If they haven’t done at least their proverbial 10000 hours you’re no expert and your gained ‘knowledge’ is mostly second hand. BTW, usually, if your pictures are dull you’re too far away.
