If only we had a huge fusion reactor with an immensely long lifetime that was located a safe distance from Earth and beaming us energy that we could collect and use easily without generating carbon dioxide...

Maybe. I’m 67 and fusion power has always been 15 years away. Lots of options for fission until the problem is solved, if ever.

Big fan of Thorium reactors with passive cooling, also because hybrid reactors can "incinerate" weapons grade nuclear waste.

Ah! I still remember the good ol' days atomic energy. The days spent mining U-235 in the outback, and each of them atoms only yield only 2 MeV. But now they are trying to put atoms back together?! What has world come to?! *Grumble some more and suck on electronic pipe.*

We need fusion so we won't run out of helium for balloons. Think of the children.

No more fission unless breeder reactors are built to use spent fuel, reduse its volume and its toxic 24,000 year half life.

Matt Ridley is a poor excuse for a rationalist.

I see you are well informed on alternative energy systems.

This is a stunning breakthrough. I remember in 1980 that sustained nuclear fusion was 15 years away!

Wonder how those cold fusion guys in Utah are doing.

I favor MIT/
@CFS_energy too!@TokamakEnergy uses spherical tokamaks, which I don't think will be able to achieve as high of magnetic fields. I support both companies though (and fission)!pic.twitter.com/GaU6e6B3tm

More polywell research would be helpful. Research funding should be allocated in a more balanced manner if we are trying to minimize the expected cost and delay to achieve economically viable fusion power.

And then just think about the billions and billions of dollars wasted on solar panels and wind turbines. This has always been the real contender to replace fossil fuels.
-
Solar and wind energy are cheaper than fossil fuels. Their construction is actively saving money right now. https://qz.com/1125355/solar-and-wind-are-now-the-cheapest-energy-around-unless-you-need-to-store-it/ … Storage isn't much of an issue since they still account for a relatively small percentage of aggregate U.S. electrical production capacity.
-
Do those figures take into account government subsidies that fossil fuels don't have. And does it measure the costs involved with how much more consistent and reliable fossil fuels are at producing energy. Fusion nuclear will be able to match it on that.https://news.energysage.com/solar-energy-vs-fossil-fuels/ …
-
(a) present subsidies yes (https://www.nrel.gov/news/press/2017/nrel-report-utility-scale-solar-pv-system-cost-fell-last-year.html …), past no but we had to prime the pump (b) we aren't at the limit of ability to absorb variable capacity yet so we should still build more (c) 15-30 years away for 60+ years; keep funding but don't skip options today
