Or as I put it in Enlightenment Now: "The team that brings clean and abundant energy to the world will benefit humanity more than all of history’s saints, heroes, prophets, martyrs, and laureates combined."https://stevenpinker.com/publications/enlightenment-now-case-reason-science-humanism-and-progress …

While I heartily welcome clean energy, I do not regard it as a panacea or as providing meaning or purpose to my life. Like all major steps forward, it will provide a new constellation of problems and untended consequences. In all of this, the problem of happiness remains

Well, I'd put some credit to the folks who helped bring about the Enlightenment so we can research this stuff instead of just pray for it.

The quote is classic Pinker: unuanced, imprecise and false. He assumes that saints, heroes, marytrs, laureates, prophets, and the clean energy team all aim at producing the same benefit. Anyone with a modicum of historical knowledge can see that he is comparing apples and oranges

A work whose most impressive part, the numerous graps, was produced by historians and social scientists in Oxford. Pinker's job is to frame these graphs by couching them in unuanced/hyperbolic claims. In a word he is a propagandist showing no philosophical precision or care.

I don't know Steve, creating a society where we don't kill each other was a pretty big step in making it so we can actually have the ability to research clean energy.

Benefit humanity? Another unhelpful abstraction. For that portion of humanity that has died, clean energy means nothing. For many of those people perhaps religion through more meaning, solace and, dare I say it, happiness to their lives.

Humans have shown that more resources and better technology doesn’t help us be a better species. With limitless energy, we would just enable more methods to enslave and mistreat each other. #sapiens #energy #humanity #IYI

Can you show this claim scientifically? I mean, clean and abundant energy is quite nice, but there are many other factors to ensuring socioeconomic health. "Abundant" is a relative term, for instance, distribution is still a problem, and so on.
