The title of the talk implies causation (as in, "do this, and you’ll increase your chances to live to 100") but in their paper I only see that they’ve established correlation. Am I the only one who is bothered by this…?
-
It’s a very fair criticism of medical statistics in general to say most studies identify correlation not causation. In this case something that is inherently good and makes you feel good may also be good for you medically. What’s to lose? Be nice.
-
To prove causation you would have two groups of grumpy people, one forced to interact, the other left alone for control. The forced interaction group should have higher survivor rate. I'll take a wild guess - the study would prove to be statistically not significant :)

Might be fun to watch though!!

Unfortunately the effect size depicted in her graph for exercise (didn’t check others) is very outdated & misconstrues what is currently understood in 2018 regarding the association of physical activity in mitigating the risk of premature death see

Exercise and being nice to people are both the way to go. Join a gym, get a friendly personal trainer and pump some iron.pic.twitter.com/jlwtpsnw77

I guess I need to go and check the actual paper. It is really hard to get good estimates of these predictors unless you have very large datasets. This looks like a "feel good" result that might not hold up to methodological scrutiny.
-
TED seems to attract that kind of "feel good" vibe and naivety.
-
I agree. But it is not just TED. All media pretty much. And ultimately it is the general audience who wants to hear simple answers that feel right.
