There's a lot of these about https://www.sciencealert.com/the-uk-has-just-switch-on-its-tokamak-nuclear-fusion-reactor … https://www.ipp.mpg.de/14779/stellarator … Best quote on fusion power "It isn't 30 years away, its $100Bn away"

In France, 35 nations are collaborating to build the world's largest magnetic fusion device that has been designed to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale & carbon-free source of energy based on the same principle that powers our Sun and stars: https://www.iter.org/ pic.twitter.com/FsvnEyYjci

Combined with the LIFT principle this is one of the few ideas in fusion that might end up working. The Liquid Salt would be an excellent heat transfer and cooling medium, superior to anything else.http://news.mit.edu/2018/new-era-fusion-research-mit-eni-0309 …

Not to rain on the parade, I'm a huge fan of fusion power too, but: doesn't "breakthrough" imply, like, something actually happened? Calling another idea about a possible approach to fusion power a "breakthrough" is not helping anyone, I think.

I'd like to see what's novel about their tokamak plans compared to https://www.tokamakenergy.co.uk/ - is it the use of High Temperature Superconductors?
-
Its supposedly the superconducting magnets and a particular bit of materials science that help create more powerful magnets.
-
tokamak energy tell a more plausible story to my ears - luckily nothing more urgent than curiosity rests on the correctness of my opinion ;)

Why no mention of Electron Bombardment reactors in this article, especially given how promising the work done on them by Sandia Labs in the 1990s was?

Sun's fusion energy floods Earth with electromagnetic energy.. Genetically modifying plants to use more of the electromagnetic energy would be a better used of MIT's skills. Side benefit would be the plants would reflect heat like polar ice and fields of snow.
-
Mushrooms are growing using the electromagnetic radiation from Chernobyl and Fukushima

Question: How does energy get from the fusion ring to the steam/turbines?

I fail to understand how launching a company equates to a breakthrough?!

The gap between the advanced countries and the rest is widening more and more. In thirty years those in the rest will beg to become a colony.
-
The UK post Brexit will probably be such a country begging to be colonised by EU (or at least to rejoin!)
