Combined with the LIFT principle this is one of the few ideas in fusion that might end up working. The Liquid Salt would be an excellent heat transfer and cooling medium, superior to anything else.http://news.mit.edu/2018/new-era-fusion-research-mit-eni-0309 …

Not to rain on the parade, I'm a huge fan of fusion power too, but: doesn't "breakthrough" imply, like, something actually happened? Calling another idea about a possible approach to fusion power a "breakthrough" is not helping anyone, I think.

I'd like to see what's novel about their tokamak plans compared to https://www.tokamakenergy.co.uk/  - is it the use of High Temperature Superconductors?

Its supposedly the superconducting magnets and a particular bit of materials science that help create more powerful magnets.

Sun's fusion energy floods Earth with electromagnetic energy.. Genetically modifying plants to use more of the electromagnetic energy would be a better used of MIT's skills. Side benefit would be the plants would reflect heat like polar ice and fields of snow.
